43 Swedish disability organisations in co-operation
The Swedish Disability Federation is the united voice of the Swedish disability movement before government, the parliament and national authorities. The federation was founded 1942 and consists today of 43 national disability organisations with about 500 000 individual members. The Swedish Disability Federation is a member of the European Disability Forum (EDF), an umbrella organisation representing about 50 million people with disabilities in Europe.
The Swedish Disability Federation's news agency IKAPP employed 3 journalists from 1997-2004 producing news articles about persons with disabilities with subscribers from authorities and mainstream media. Since 2002 the Media project has worked to raise awareness among journalists about the portrayal of persons with disabilities. The project has produced a handbook, several analysis, seminars and courses to achieve an open dialogue with leading Swedish media players and universities training journalists.
